ABOUT BALTIC
Baltic is a coalition between two Liverpool based artists, Anna Benson and Roisin Hyland.
Formed one windy, wet, sleety, snowy, blowy, dark, starry night in 2009. They decided to team up to do an exhibition. On the night of the Folkloristic's preview they could not find anything unique to wear. Disappointed but inspired by their own artwork they decided to make their own. People loved it! and wondered where they could buy it?
From that day on they decided to create accessories that they would both love to wear. Jewellery with an edge! that could not be found on the high street. Searching through antique shops they soon assembled beautiful items they could use to start creating their threasures. Their jewellery became more then just something to wear, it became small works of art. Each piece is as unique as its owner and made with love and care.
Baltic's accessories are currently being stocked in LandBaby in the Bluecoat, Liverpool and can be found once a month in the Manchester fashion market on Tibb St alongside Molly Brown clothing. Customers are also welcome to come and view the stock in Baltic's Studio space in the Elevator Building in Liverpool.
Roisin Hyland works mostly in collage creating three dimensional forms and installations. Her work looks at thoughts and memories that co-exist together living in a bleak, uneasy cohesion. Using found and discarded materials, combined with references from forgotten girls comics she is able to manipulate the significance of her thoughts creating new meaning with a narrative text. Teetering on collapse her work is gently pinned or placed together and its fragile existence may disintegrate at any time.
Anna Benson paints on found materials, exploring the ideas of mataphores and folktales in the animal kingdom. She is currently working as a Co-director of Arena studios and Gallery in Liverpool.
